How To Stain a Deck In 50% Less Time and 50% Less Effort
I want to share a secret on how to dramatically cut down the time it takes to stain your deck, while at the same time, greatly improving the quality of your staining job.
Instead of using a regular 3 or 4 inch hand-held paint brush for those long sections of flat decking that seem to take forever to brush out, use a "push brush", like the one I'm holding in the video.
The brush itself is pretty simple and can be found at just about any hardware or home improvement store. Just look in the car wash or cleaning section of the store for a window or car cleaning brush that can be attached to an extension pole. They're just like the ones the folks at the car wash use to clean the front end of your car before they roll it into the car wash. They have a fairly soft bristle, much like a paint brush would have. And make sure that the brush you buy will fit inside of a 5-gallon pail.
With the brush in hand...the process is pretty simple.
The stain I'm working with here is DEFY Extreme Wood Stain. This water-based stain goes on easy and holds up well against UV damage.
The first step is to cut in the areas with a smaller hand brush that you can't reach with the push-brush like under the rails. Once everything is cut in, take the push-brush and just dip and brush. Work in sections and work from one end of the board all the way to other end. It's really just like sweeping or mopping your deck, but instead of a broom or a mop, you're using a brush. Be sure to avoid stopping or breaking in the middle of the boards as that can result in ugly lap marks.
The results look great. Not only are you getting your project done quickly, but a push-brush does a great job of really forcing the stain into the wood. That means that your staining job will not only look good, but it will also last longer.
11 Keys to Successfully Sealing Your Patio Pavers
When my neighbor first decided to install a paver-block patio, he chose paver stones for several reasons. He thought they would last longer than other materials like wood, or poured concrete, and that they would be maintenance free. While they do look great and they’re incredibly durable, it wasn’t long before he learned that they aren’t completely maintenance free.
